Public Service Advisory: Use a Quality USB-C Charging Set for Your iPhone 16 or iPhone 17

At 3C-Easy Markham, we have recently noticed an increase in iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series devices arriving with charging-related problems, including cases involving the charging circuit or motherboard.

This advisory is not intended to cause panic. Most iPhone owners charge their devices every day without experiencing a serious failure. However, considering the value and complexity of newer iPhones, we strongly recommend using a reputable, high-quality USB-C power adapter and USB-C to USB-C charging cable.

Charging Damage May Develop Gradually

One important point is that charging-related motherboard damage does not always happen in a single obvious incident.

A lower-quality charger may appear to work normally. The phone may still charge, and the owner may not notice any immediate warning signs. However, if the charger provides less stable power or has weaker protection against voltage fluctuations, excessive current, heat or power surges, repeated charging may gradually place additional stress on the phone’s charging circuitry.

In some cases, this stress may accumulate over weeks or months rather than causing the phone to fail immediately. Early symptoms may be minor or intermittent, such as:

  • Charging occasionally stopping and restarting
  • The phone or charging connector becoming unusually warm
  • Charging working only at certain angles
  • Slower or inconsistent charging
  • Temporary accessory or charging warnings
  • The device becoming unreliable after being connected to power

The phone may continue working until the affected charging circuit eventually becomes unstable or fails. This can make the cause difficult to identify because the problem may appear long after the charger was first used.

Using a questionable charger once does not mean that the phone will be damaged. The greater concern is repeated, long-term use of charging equipment with poor power regulation, inadequate protection circuitry or inconsistent manufacturing quality.

Why Charger Quality Matters

A charger does more than send electricity into your phone. A properly designed USB-C power adapter must regulate its output, communicate with the device and respond safely when electrical conditions change.

Higher-quality chargers generally provide more robust protection against:

  • Voltage fluctuations
  • Excessive current
  • Overheating
  • Short circuits
  • Electrical surges
  • Unstable power delivery

Lower-quality or poorly manufactured chargers may have less effective protection circuitry, inconsistent output or inadequate quality control. The difference may not be noticeable during normal daily charging, but repeated exposure to unstable power can increase unnecessary stress on sensitive internal components.

This does not mean that every charging-related motherboard failure was caused by the charger. Charging-port contamination, liquid exposure, damaged cables, worn connectors, faulty electrical outlets and ordinary internal component failure can produce similar symptoms.

However, when a newer iPhone develops a charging-related motherboard problem, the charging equipment being used should be considered as part of the diagnosis—especially when the adapter or cable is counterfeit, damaged, unbranded or of uncertain quality.

What Charging Equipment Should You Use?

For iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series devices, we recommend:

  • An Apple USB-C power adapter; or
  • A reputable third-party USB-C Power Delivery charger from an established brand;
  • A well-made USB-C to USB-C charging cable;
  • Equipment carrying recognized Canadian or international electrical safety certification.

A charger does not necessarily need to be manufactured by Apple to be suitable. Reputable third-party USB-C Power Delivery chargers can work safely and effectively.

The important distinction is not simply Apple versus aftermarket. It is the difference between properly certified, well-engineered charging equipment and products with unknown manufacturing standards or inadequate electrical protection.

Inspect Your Charger and Cable Regularly

Stop using a charger or cable if you notice:

  • Excessive or unusual heat
  • Buzzing, popping or crackling sounds
  • A loose USB-C connection
  • Bent, burned or discoloured connectors
  • Frayed or exposed wiring
  • Charging repeatedly starting and stopping
  • A burning smell
  • The charger behaving differently from before

A charger that still supplies power is not necessarily functioning correctly. Intermittent charging, unusual heat or unstable behaviour may indicate that the adapter, cable or phone requires attention.

Also avoid forcing a cable into the charging port. If the connector does not fit properly, the port may contain compacted debris or have physical damage that should be professionally inspected.

Protect the Device You Already Invested In

An iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 is a significant investment. Saving a small amount on an unknown charging set may not be worthwhile when a reliable charger can often be used for several years and across multiple USB-C devices.

There is no need to panic or immediately replace every charger in your home. Simply check the equipment you are currently using.

When the brand, certification, condition or origin of a charger is uncertain, replacing it with a reputable USB-C Power Delivery charging set is a reasonable preventative step. This is especially important when the same charger is used every day or left connected overnight.

A high-quality charger cannot prevent every charging or motherboard failure. However, it can provide more stable power, stronger electrical protection and reduce avoidable long-term stress on the device’s charging circuitry.

Charging-related damage is not always immediate. Protect your phone by using reputable equipment before gradual electrical stress becomes a costly repair.
