Canada Post Strike Looms: Mail Delays and Business Disruptions Ahead

Edit (again): Canada Post workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), began a nationwide strike on September 25, 2025 after the federal government accepted major reform recommendations. The proposed changes include ending most door-to-door delivery, converting millions of addresses to community mailboxes, reducing delivery frequency, lifting the ban on rural post office closures, and allowing more frequent stamp price hikes. During the strike, mail and parcels are not being processed or delivered, and many post offices are closed. Essential items such as socio-economic cheques and live animals already in transit are still handled. Businesses and consumers face widespread service disruptions.

Edit: As of May 23, 2025, Canada Post remains operational despite the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) initiating a nationwide overtime ban. This action directs members to refuse work beyond eight hours per day or 40 hours per week, potentially leading to service delays.

Canada Post faces a potential strike on May 22, 2025, as contract talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers stall. Key issues include wage increases, job security, and staffing for weekend deliveries. Small businesses, especially in e-commerce, are bracing for disruptions, recalling losses from the 2024 strike that cost over $1 billion. Alternative carriers like UPS and FedEx may see increased demand, but capacity limits could pose challenges. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business urges both parties to reach an agreement to avoid further economic impact. Canadians are advised to prepare for possible mail delays.

For Canadian customer: Feel free to choose consolidated option or Purolator option in order to ensure timely delivery. Please note that this may not be viable for customers who live in rural area as Canada Post is the sole delivery provider to those area.
